Claude Code is now easier to use than Cowork

Claude Code has always been the most capable way to use Claude, and in the desktop app it now needs less setup than Cowork as well. Cowork still makes sense if you want to limit what Claude can reach on your computer.

If you use Claude chat or Cowork a lot, you have probably wondered whether you should look at Claude Code, the tool Anthropic built for developers. Despite the name, you don’t need to be a developer or know how to code. You ask for what you want in plain English, and it writes and runs any code itself. When would you actually reach for it?

The short answer: Claude Code has always been the most capable of the three, and it has now become easier to use as well. The main reason to stay in Cowork is if you want to restrict Claude for security reasons.

The three Claude products

  1. Claude chat is the Claude most people know. It is a chatbot that runs in your browser, in the desktop app, or on your phone.
  2. Cowork works with files on your computer, inside the folders you connect to it.
  3. Claude Code started as a coding tool for developers. In the desktop app it now has its own Code tab that looks and works like a normal chat.

Cowork and Claude Code both need the Claude desktop app, and it is worth installing: the desktop app can do far more than Claude in your browser. Claude Code also needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). On Team and Enterprise plans, an admin can limit what it is allowed to do, so if the Code tab is missing or locked down, ask whoever manages your Claude account.

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic began merging chat and Cowork into a single Claude. Pro and Max plans get it first, with Team and Free plans following, so depending on your plan you may still see Cowork as a separate tab. Claude Code stays separate either way.

1. Claude Code can reach any folder on your computer

Claude chat runs in the cloud. Cowork works only inside the folders you connect, and it cannot look anywhere else, even when the answer is sitting in another folder on your computer. Claude Code starts each session in a folder you choose, but it can move across your whole computer to finish a task, asking your permission first. It can search your Documents, Desktop, and Downloads folders.

Why this is easier: you can start every Claude Code session from your Documents folder. You no longer have to decide which folder a chat needs before you start. Claude finds its own way to whatever files the task requires.

The main time to choose Cowork is when you want Claude kept inside one folder, for example because other folders on your computer hold sensitive files it should not see.

2. Claude Code can build software

All three products use the same Claude models, so Claude chat is technically just as good at writing code. The difference is the set of tools around the model, sometimes called the “harness.” Claude Code’s tools let it write software, run it, test it, and check that it works.

If you are building a web page or an app, or running a research project that needs many data analysis scripts, Claude Code will usually do a better job.

Why this is easier: Claude Code runs and checks its own work without you having to ask.

3. Claude Code can update its own skills, memory, and automations

Everything you do with Claude Code lives on your computer as ordinary files. Your past conversations sit in a hidden folder. So do your skills, the short instruction files you write to teach Claude how to do a recurring task, along with its memory and your scheduled tasks. Because Claude Code can open and edit any file, it can edit these too.

Why this is easier: you can change a skill, a memory, or an automation in the middle of a conversation, just by saying so. For example:

  • “Update the skill so we don’t make that mistake again.”
  • After a scheduled task runs: “Next time, give me a slide deck instead of a Google Doc.”
  • “You left Mike off the email thread. He should always be copied on emails like this. Remember that for next time.”

Claude makes the change itself. It can also work across many files at once: you could ask Claude Code to read your last fifty conversations with it, spot where things went wrong, and update several skills or automations in one go.

4. Claude Code can install the tools it needs

Claude is most useful when it is connected to the systems you already work in, such as your email, Google Drive, and CRM. There is not always a ready-made Claude connector for the software you need. There is often a more technical route instead, such as an API or a command-line tool. You do not need to know what those are: they are simply ways for one piece of software to talk to another.

When Claude Code needs one of these, it can find it online, download it, and install it on your computer, asking your permission first. Chat and Cowork run code in a sealed-off environment. That environment can install some common programming packages, but it cannot reach most of the internet, and it cannot install anything on your own computer.

Those limits are there for security. Letting an AI install software carries some risk: a web page could try to trick Claude into downloading something harmful. In our experience, Claude is good at recognizing suspicious links and software, and Claude Code shows you what it wants to install before it does. For people who use Claude every day, we find these limits get in the way more often than they help.

Before you switch

  • Read the permission prompts. Claude Code asks before it edits files, runs commands, or installs software. You can change how often it asks with the mode selector next to the send button. Start with the settings that ask most, and loosen them once you trust how it works.
  • It can change and delete files. Accidents are now rare, but work from folders that are backed up or synced to the cloud.
  • It can use up your allowance faster. Because Claude Code can search your whole computer, it sometimes reads files it did not need. If you regularly hit your weekly limit, send simple questions to chat instead.
  • Your data rules still apply. Reaching your whole computer means reaching everything on it. Check what your organization allows before pointing Claude at donor records or sensitive investigation material. Data security and privacy basics is a good place to start.

To try it, open the desktop app, click the Code tab, choose your Documents folder, and give it a task you would normally hand to Cowork.
