All three run the same Claude models. What changes is how much of your computer each one can reach.
Claude Chat is the familiar chatbot. It answers questions and holds up well for back-and-forth strategic thinking. It is also the least capable of the three.
Cowork is the same chatbot, except it works with files inside the folders you connect to it. It can read, create, and change files there, but it cannot look anywhere else. In September 2026 Anthropic began merging Chat and Cowork into one Claude, so depending on your plan you may no longer see them as separate tabs.
Claude Code does much more than its name suggests, and you don’t need to know how to code to use it. It can reach any folder on your computer, build and test software, update its own skills and memory, and install the tools it needs, usually asking permission first. It can also change or delete files by accident, though this is now rare, so work from folders that are backed up. In the desktop app it now looks like a normal chat, and because you no longer have to pick a folder for each task, it is easier to use than Cowork. We suggest it for anyone who uses Claude regularly.
Choose Cowork instead when you want to restrict Claude for security reasons, for example to keep it away from folders that hold sensitive files.
There is one reason to prefer Chat. It uses up your weekly Claude allowance more slowly. Cowork and Code search through folders on their own initiative, sometimes spending your allowance on irrelevant files. If you regularly run out before your usage resets, send simple questions to Chat.
